Missing teeth can affect both the aesthetics and function of your smile. Because tooth loss can have some big consequences, dental professionals recommend that you get teeth replaced as soon as possible. But what if you lost your teeth a long time ago? Can you still visit an oral surgeon to get them replaced with dental implants, or have you missed your opportunity? This blog post explains what you should know.
The Importance of Timing with Dental Implants
Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots that get surgically placed into the jawbone. In order for them to thrive, they need a strong and sturdy base of support. Unfortunately, the longer you have been missing teeth, the smaller and weaker the jawbone becomes. It may even reach the point where it can no longer support dental implants.
However, that does not mean you should lose hope. Thanks to advancements in treatment techniques, even many patients with bone loss can enjoy successful dental implant treatment.
Treatment Strategies for Patients with Jawbone Loss
Regardless of how long you have been missing teeth, you should attend a consultation with a qualified oral surgeon. They will examine your mouth, take some X-rays, and then discuss your next steps. Depending on the extent of your bone loss, they might recommend one or more of the following:
- Bone grafting: This procedure involves adding bone to the jaw. After it integrates the new tissue, it will be better able to support dental implants. There are several types of bone grafts, which are suited to different types and levels of bone loss.
- All-on-4 dental implants: This procedure involves placing four dental implants in areas of the jawbone that are naturally strong and thick. It minimizes the chances that a bone graft will be necessary.
- Zygomatic dental implants: These are intended for patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw. They are anchored in the cheekbones, so they can support prosthetic teeth without extensive bone grafting.
- Snap-On implant dentures: In some cases, a removable implant denture can be supported by as few as two dental implants placed toward the front of the jaw. This can minimize the need for bone grafting.
Once your dental implants are in place, they can prevent additional bone loss and even reverse it to a small degree.
Do Not Assume It Is Too Late!
You deserve to have a complete and confident smile, no matter how long it has been since you lost your teeth. Talk to an oral surgeon about your options so you can have a realistic view of the road ahead.
