Tooth loss comes with a number of problems, such as decreased chewing power, aesthetic differences in your smile, and more. If you have recently lost one or more teeth — or you suspect that you will need to have some teeth removed — you may be eager to move forward with dental implants ASAP. But how long will you have to wait before you can get started with tooth replacement? That really depends on your circumstances. This blog post touches on a few possible timelines.
Immediate Implant Placement
In some cases, it is possible to get dental implants immediately after tooth extractions — in fact, these two procedures can occur during the same appointment! This path might be open to you if you are free of active gum disease, have a strong jawbone, and do not have other conditions that need to be addressed before your implant placement.
If you need to get all of your teeth removed in either your upper or lower dental arch, ask your care team about All-on-4. During this unique treatment, you can get your teeth removed, receive dental implant posts, and get a temporary denture attached to your implants in just one day.
Early Implant Placement
Early implant placement is sometimes called immediate-delayed placement. It usually happens 2 – 3 months following extractions. During this brief waiting period, your gums are able to heal from the extractions. It also gives your care team a bit of time to take care of any infections, like gum disease, that might negatively affect your dental implant journey.
Since early implant placement takes place so soon after extractions, it might allow you to avoid a bone graft. (The jawbone starts to deteriorate very soon after tooth removal, and if the deterioration progresses too far, it can jeopardize dental implants or necessitate a bone grafting procedure. Dental implants can stop this deterioration process.)
Delayed Implant Placement
Delayed implant placement happens at least 3 months after tooth extractions. It may be the best course of action if you have a stubborn case of gum disease, or if you need a bone graft to strengthen your jawbone.
Plan Ahead and Act Promptly
If you plan on getting dental implants, you should let your dental team know before your extractions. That allows them to start planning your treatment so it is as efficient as possible. Hopefully, you will not have to live with an incomplete smile for long!
