During this surgery, a bit of bone material is placed on the jawbone. As the grafted material integrates with the surrounding tissue, it results in a stronger and larger jaw that can provide a sturdy foundation for dental implants.

Have you been informed that you need a dental bone graft? While you might understandably be a bit nervous, there is really nothing to be afraid of. The surgery itself should be comfortable, and you can expect your recovery to go smoothly. Here are some key points to keep in mind about the healing process:

How Long Does Recovery Take?

The recovery timeline after dental bone grafting varies from person to person. Most patients experience initial healing within the first two weeks, during which swelling and discomfort gradually subside. Your gums should be completely recovered during that period, and there should be no lingering pain.

However, the complete process of bone integration can take up to six months. Your dentist or oral surgeon will schedule follow-up appointments so they can monitor your recovery. They will let you know when you can receive a dental implant. (Some dental implants are placed at the same time as a bone graft, but often, there are several months between the two procedures.)

Support Your Body’s Healing Process

In order to support your body’s healing process, you should follow your dentist’s post-surgery instructions carefully. You should:

Take prescribed medications as directed to manage pain and prevent infection.

Maintain good oral hygiene by gently brushing around the surgical site and using an antimicrobial mouthwash.

Consume a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to aid in recovery.

Eat only soft foods while your soft tissue is healing. Once your gums have recovered, you may be able to eat fairly normally.

Avoid smoking and alcohol, as these can impair healing.

Ensure adequate sleep and avoid strenuous physical activity.

Apply a cold compress to manage swelling.

When to Ask for Assistance

Although the recovery process for a dental bone graft typically goes smoothly, you should be aware of signs indicating that you need professional assistance. For example, it would be wise to contact your care provider if you experience:

Excessive pain, swelling, or bleeding beyond the expected recovery period.

Persistent fever (this could indicate an infection).

A feeling of looseness or instability at the graft site.

Seeking prompt care can allow your oral surgeon to take care of complications before they progress and lead to severe consequences.

Recovering from a dental bone graft might be easier than you think! With good habits and a bit of time, it should not be long before you are feeling like yourself again.

Meet the Practice

Drs.
