Following this direction can minimize post-op pain and reduce the risk of complications. It is perfectly fine to indulge in sweet treats during this time — ice cream can make anyone feel better! However, you should not neglect proper nutrition. What are some healthy soft foods that can support your body’s healing process and your overall health? Here are some ideas:

Brothy or Blended Soups

Soups can be a comforting choice while your mouth is tender, especially if you are not ready for heavier foods. Choose brothy options, such as chicken broth or vegetable broth, when you want something light and hydrating. Blended soups, such as butternut squash, tomato, potato, or lentil soup, can provide more calories and nutrients. Be sure to let soup cool slightly before you eat it, since very hot foods may irritate sensitive tissues. Avoid soups with crunchy toppings, tough pieces of meat, seeds, or sharp vegetable skins.

Mashed Foods

Mashed foods are easy to customize and can help you feel satisfied without much chewing. Mashed potatoes are a classic option, but you can also try mashed sweet potatoes, avocado, bananas, beans, peas, carrots, or cauliflower. For extra protein, mix in Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, soft cheese, or a little smooth nut butter when appropriate. Keep the texture creamy and free of lumps. If a food feels too thick, thin it with milk, broth, or water until it is easier to swallow.

Smoothies or Protein Drinks

Smoothies and protein drinks can be useful if your appetite is low or if chewing feels difficult. Blend yogurt, milk, protein powder, soft fruit, avocado, or nut butter for a balanced drink. You can also add spinach or oats if your blender can make the mixture completely smooth. Drink from a cup or spoon rather than using a straw; suction may disturb the healing area after some procedures.

Other Soft Food Ideas

As you begin to feel better, you may be able to add more soft, nourishing foods to your meals. Scrambled eggs are a gentle source of protein, especially when cooked until moist. Meatloaf, tender fish, soft tofu, well-cooked pasta, oatmeal, cottage cheese, refried beans, and soft-cooked vegetables can also work well. Cut foods into small pieces and chew away from the surgical area if possible. Continue to avoid crunchy, sticky, spicy, or hard foods until your dental team says it is safe to return to your normal diet or you feel well-healed.

A soft food diet can be both nutritious and satisfying! Go grocery shopping before your procedure so your kitchen is well-stocked with tasty options that can support your recovery.

Meet the Practice

Dr. Steve Koo has decades of experience in dentistry, and he is proud to be a board-certified oral surgeon.
